Catasetum go dormant every year and look dead. They are not dead and will begin to grow again in a couple of months. If the newest bulb is hard, the plant is healthy. Healthy plants can still have soft or dried out back-bulbs. After they grow a new bulb, they will leaf out flower and then lose all the leaves. This flower combines several of the favorite features of a flower in this family. It is a bright yellow with spots and it has a unique flower shape. The sub-family Clowesetum is known for flower longevity and high flower count. This flower is also unique it that it is hermaphroditic, it has both male and female sexual organs capable of pollenating itself. The photo is a female form.
